Pownce and Vordingborg Festuge
Ex and I were down in Vordingborg on Tuesday night to see Shu Bi Dua playing live. I was armed with just the crappy camera built in to my phone so I only snapped a few shots of the huge crowd from out vantage point sitting in the grass on the side of a hill beside the stage.
Anyway, I uploaded those shots to the gallery a few minutes ago. The act of uploading the pictures got me thinking about sending large numbers of photos by email to my grandparents in Ireland and by extension the ability to share files using Pownce.
As a free user you can send attachments up to 10MB is size. I think that’s lame considering Google allows you to send attachments up to 20MB to other Gmail users.
Another thing that’s bugging me about Pownce is sending messages with links in. Much like Twitter, when you send a message with Pownce the URL’s are automatically converted to TinyURLs.
This is all well and good except that these links are only clickable on the web page and not within the Pownce desktop application.
If you want to include a link that will appear clickable inside the desktop client you have to use the “link” option when sending a message. This means clicking on the link field, pasting you link into the link box and then typing your message into a separate box.
Am I the only one who thinks this is overkill considering links inserted into an ordinary message are converted to TinyURLs anyway.
It’s really forcing the user to take an unnecessary extra step in order to perform a function that is so simple on other platforms.
One more thing can somebody tell me how I’m supposed to pronounce “Pownce”?
I’ve been talking with folks today and they’ve pronounced it in a way which sounds very similar to “Ponce”.
Here is what the Urban Dictionary has to say about ponce:
1. An individual who attempts to fake having intelligence, class, or culture.
I knew he was a bit of a ponce, but what’s with the monocle?
2. Widely used to reffer to a poser, camp or soft looking person- the type of person who looks like they would get beaten up by a girl
“Jimmy cried during titanic-hes such a ponce”
“Pato i cant believe your wearing make up,you ponce!”3. Chiefly British. Someone who procures customers for whores. The English word for Pimp. Although somewhat outdated it is still used but under different meaning;
A camp person, overtly dressed, gay.“Get your arse in gear you fuckin’ ponce!”
I really hope that this is not what Kevin had in mind when they named the service
For those of you interested in trying out Ponce Pownce, I have 4 invites to give away, just leave a comment on this post.
If you’re already on Pownce you my username is PaulOFlaherty and you can see my profile here.
Also, I still have 1 invite remaining for VeohTV as well if anybody wants it.
Update:
It appears I’m not the only one who thinks Pownce sounds like Ponce.
I call it “POW ounce” – like a cat or tiger pouncing on something. That is what it looks like to me at least.
