Vidcast: Pigeon Holes, Mommy Bloggers, Subscribers vs Readers

2008 March 22

Yesterday Scot Duke invited me to be co-host on a very impromptu Mr.Business Golf Show and we talked about a couple of posts of mine.

The first topic of the show (and the last as well) was my reaction to a post by Erin Kotecki (The Queen of Spain). called "So you want to talk to mommy bloggers".

I had, literally 5 minutes previous to coming on the show, just posted a reply to Erin’s post called "Pigeon hole yourself and reap the consequences", which yesterday garnered some quite emotional comments so I’m hoping that this video doesn’t get me strung up from the rafters.

The second topic we discuss is about Subscribers vs Readers, which came out of a guest post that I did for Fuelmyblog called "1000 Subscribers or 100 readers?".

In the show we talk about subscribers and readers from both the bloggers point of view and the marketing point of view as well as discuss when is a good time to display your reader count (if at all).

The post on Fuelmyblog came was written as a response to Corvida from SheGeeks question:

"For those that have their RSS subscriber stats on their blog, when did decide to put yours up? At what number do you think it’s beneficial for others to do the same?"

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the show. In hindsight I think it would have been great if this recording from yesterday could have went out with the post that I wrote in response to Erin, but what can you do?

I hope you enjoy the show.

Hey, I just found out that at tonight’s ClamBake Cafe Blog TV Live from the Bengal Coast Bar I am going to be in the room full of ‘Mommy-blogger’ wannabes…this could make the ClamBake Cafe very interesting to watch.

I’m sorry Scot.. but I don’t get it! What is a “Mommy Blogger” wannabe?

Could not DISAGREE more about the anonymous blogger issue. I blog as CityMama. I have built a trusted readership over the 4 years that I have been blogging. ANd PS, I don’t hide my real name, it’s on my blog. The name of my blog is no different than a magazine title. Or, no different than–what’s the buzz word these days–”a brand?”

The fact that my blog is not titled with my name does not stop me from receiving 20+ pitches a day. It did not stop Saturn from giving me a car to drive. It does not the countless “all expenses paid” junket invitations that hit my inbox. No one is worried about me being anonymous–they care about how I will present their product to my readership–which trusts my opinion because they “know” me.

@Stefania / Citymama Well there’s the failure in your argument. You don’t blog anonymously! Your name is on your blog.

You either blog anonymously or you don’t. You don’t!

The point you were making in the podcast was about mommy blog names leading to pigeonholing, right? Yes, my name is in the about section of my blog but it’s not the title of my blog. So when I say it’s “on my blog,” I should clarify (for you) that it’s *to be found* on my blog. Your assumption is that all mombloggers who go by a “mommy name” (like mine) are anonymous and therefore subject to all sorts of presumptions. And following your argument, I am an anonymous blogger, because my blog name is not my actual name. But contrary to your argument, I never have had to worry about PR flacks not trusting me or whatever it was you said. THAT is the point I was making. Anonymous (or non-real-named) blog does not automatically trust issue, at least not in my experience. I don’t understand how you can make a blanket assertion like that.

    @Stefania / CityMama

Yes Stefania, you’re right that the point I was making was about “Blog” names leading to pigeonholing and I stress Blog name (although the name somebody blogs under, as in signs their posts with, can have a similar effect).

But here’s what you’re not getting Stefania. You are NOT an anonymous blogger. You blog under a pseudonym. A pseudonym does not mean you are anonymous.

In order to be anonymous there would have to be NO personally identifiable information attached to your pseudonym.

An anonymous person would be a person whose name and other personally identifiable information is not known.

Your name is known, you post it on your blog. So, you are not an anonymous blogger.

To look at it another way, if CityMama does something stupid online, then it is Stefania Pomponi Butler’s reputation that is hurt.

If you were an anonymous blogger your personal reputation could not be hurt by the actions of the pseudonym “CityMama”.

Now, pseudonyms can be anonymous, but your particular one is not.

I hope that clears up things :)
